School and church in miserable condition

The first project BTFS wanted to tackle was the Immanuel Christian Academy and Immanuel Church (ICA). This organization covers six blocks (small churches) in Monrovia. The sanitation conditions at the school and church were simply disastrous. No clean water, no functioning toilets, no water drainage during the rainy season, and diseases such as malaria, typhoid and HIV were and still are a feature of everyday life.

It took two years to prepare and recruit suitable local personnel. During this time, a network of education, health and safety officials was established. Then an expert from Switzerland was needed. Gian Reto Lazzarini, Delegate of the Board of Directors of the Butti Construction Company AG in Pfäffikon, spontaneously agreed to make one of his employees available for two months.
