Workshop for young women on the theme: education, self-confidence and courage to stand up for a cause.

Hosted by Hamnson Gaye, Myrtle Bowier and Sam Holt.

During a period of several weeks, a total of 30 young women between the ages of 16 and 24 were motivated from the surrounding residential areas around the SD Cooper Road Community to attend and actively participate in this workshop. The event was dedicated to the following four topics:
  1. Self-esteem and respect
  2. Sexual harassment and assault
  3. Dealing with the Internet and social media
  4. Creativity and strengthening of self-confidence
Two proven experts were available as trainers on the above-mentioned topics. Ms. Oretha Slocum, an expert in the field of health care and BTFS lecturer, spoke in her usual engaging manner on the first two areas (self-esteem and sexual harassment), while Pastor Sumo V. Kovah (Masters in Education) spoke on the benefits and dangers of social media and digitalization. Also present as a welcome guest was a representative of the Liberian National Pollce, in the person of Superintendent Blanyon Himmie, Community Service Section. The main reason for the workshop was to promote a sense of belonging among young women; to learn to assert themselves in everyday life; to be able to say no and to demand respect when respect towards women is lacking. Furthermore, also that problems - of whatever kind - can be better dealt with and solved collectively than alone. The young women were encouraged to actively seek contact with our office whenever they face challenges.  Five of the young women stood out for their active participation and have been invited to join working groups on activities to promote the local community. To this end, the namesake of our foundation, Myrtle Bowier, gave an impressive closing speech, in which she vividly explained to the young women what can be achieved if they believe in themselves and actively use their talents.
